Highly revered by many traditions of Buddhism, Amitabha Buddha, the Buddha of Infinite Light, resides in peaceful meditation in his Blissful Pure Land (Skt., Sukhavati; Tib. Dewachen), a paradisical realm said to lie in the western direction, beyond countless universes. Amitabha is one of five Dhyani Buddhas, who, together with their consorts, represent the integrated aspects of enlightened consciousness in a single mandala. They correspond to the five buddha families and the five primordial wisdoms of buddhahood. Buddha Amitabha, associated with the fire element and the western direction, belongs to the Lotus family, whose primary enlightened quality is discriminating wisdom.
