The Twenty-One Taras are renowned for their swift and compassionate healing powers to thwart fears, evil spirits, earthquakes, floods, natural disasters and many kinds of obstacles and diseases. The features of the deities in this particular Twenty-One Taras thanka come from a vision of Khenpo Ngaga, the great yogi from the nineteenth century. He shared the details of his vision with the legendary Chadral Rinpoche, who then commissioned Pema Namdol to paint it. In his vision, Khenpo Ngaga described that he received a text and blessings from Dakini Jhaza Khangjo, who was a direct emanation of Tara herself. After seeing the final painting, Chadral Rinpoche requested that this print be shared with others in the future.
This thanka includes Green Tara in the center with a mandala of twenty Taras surrounding her. Above green Tara’s crown is Buddha Amitabha. Four seated female guardian dakinis are depicted in each corner of the painting, while four standing dakinis appear with their respective colors and emblems. At the central bottom of the painting is an extremely wrathful tiger-headed protector dakini. Most special is the depiction of Khenpo Ngaga and Dakini Jhaza Khangjo holding the precious treasure-revealing text at the top of the painting.
